CHESS AND ITS ORIGIN

Chess is one of the oldest and most popular board games in the world. Its history can be traced back over 1,500 years to ancient India, where a game called chaturanga was played. Chaturanga was a four-player game that used dice and had pieces that represented different parts of the army, including elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers.

Chaturanga gradually spread to Persia and then to the Arab world, where it evolved into a two-player game called shatranj. Shatranj became popular in the Muslim world and was eventually introduced to Europe.

Today, chess is played by millions of people around the world, and it is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee. The game is known for its complexity, strategic depth, and the intellectual challenge it provides, making it a beloved pastime for enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds.

HOW TO PLAY CHESS

Chess is a game of two players. It is a board game played on a square board with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. The game is played with 16 pieces, 8 for each player, consisting of a king, queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective of the game is to checkmate your opponent’s king by placing it under threat of capture that cannot be defended against.

HOW TO DO CHESS SET

To set up the board, place the rooks on the corners of the board, the knights next to them, the bishops next to the knights, the queen on her own color, and the king on the remaining square of the same color as the queen. The pawns kept in front of all the pieces.

CHESS MOVEMENTS

Each piece has its unique way of moving. Pawns can move forward one or two squares on their first move and then only one square forward from there. They capture one square in front of them.

  • Rooks move horizontally or vertically any number of squares.
  • Knights move in an L-shape, either two squares horizontally and one square vertically or two squares vertically and one square horizontally.
  • Bishops move diagonally.
  • The queen can move horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  • The king can move one square in any direction.

SPECIAL MOVES IN CHESS

There are a few special moves in chess, including castling and en passant.

Castling is a move where the king is moved two squares towards the rook and the rook moves to the square over which the king crossed. This move is only legal if the king and rook involved have not moved, there are no pieces between them, and the king is not in check.

En passant is a move that allows a pawn to capture an opponent's pawn that has just moved two squares forward from its starting position as if it had only moved one square. This move is only legal if the capturing pawn could have captured the pawn if it had only moved one square forward.

CHECK AND CHECKMATE IN THE GAME OF CHESS

When a player puts their opponent's king under attack, the king is said to be in check. The player in check must move their king out of attack or block the attack with another piece. If a player cannot do either, then the game is over, and the player is checked.

DRAW AND STALEMATE

A stalemate is a position in which a player is not in check but cannot make a legal move. This results in a draw. A draw can also occur if both players agree to it, if there are not enough pieces left on the board to force a checkmate, or if a player has made 50 moves without capturing a piece or moving a pawn.

IMPORTANT STRATEGIES IN CHESS

Chess is a game of strategy, and there are many ways to approach it. Here are a few tips which have to be followed.

Control the center of the board: The center of the board is the most important area of the board. Controlling it gives you more space to move your pieces and more options for attack and defense.

Develop your pieces: Move your pieces out from their starting positions so they can attack and defend more effectively.

Protect your king: Keep your king safe by castling and moving it to a safe position.

Look for tactics: Look for opportunities to capture your opponent's pieces or put them in a difficult position.

Think ahead: Try to anticipate your opponent's moves and plan your own moves accordingly.
