British Chess Company Staunton Reproduction – 4.4″ Chessmen
The distinctive Lizard knights give this Staunton Castle reproduction its unmistakable character. Inspired by the late-Victorian chessmen of the British Chess Company (BCC), this set pairs deep black ebony with warm boxwood. We scaled the original 3¾-inch pattern up to a 4.4-inch king, giving the design a commanding presence on the board.
The sharply defined rims of the kings and the broad, rounded heads of the bishops echo the profiles of a late-19th-century BCC set. The Lizard knights are the most distinctive feature. On antique examples, the BCC fitted moulded xylonite heads, made from an early form of plastic, to turned wooden bases.
The Story Behind the Design
The British Chess Company entered the market in December 1891 with its Royal and Imperial chessmen. It marketed the Imperial range as “Staunton Improved,” with a redesigned pawn and knight intended to give the set a more unified appearance. In September 1893, the company introduced its BCC Staunton chessmen in a price list titled The Materials of War, replacing the Imperial range.
Our reproduction brings this distinctive chapter of British chess design to collectors who appreciate the familiar Staunton form and the unusual character of the BCC Lizard knight.
