Staunton Castle proudly present their very latest, carefully researched and precisely carved reproduction – The Early Nathaniel Cooke 1849 Set. There are some versions of the same chess set available in the market. We have available this chess set at our website in two versions. Both of versions of this chess set were introduced to us by the two famous chess collectors. According to the information provided to us by these chess collectors, this is the early version of the 1849 chess set which had been introduced by Mr. Nathaniel Cooke to Jacques of London, UK who had first produced this hallmark in the year 1849. Nathaniel Cooke registered his design at the UK Patent Office on 1 March 1849. As he was the editor of The Illustrated London News, the newspaper where Howard Staunton wrote a regular chess column, he asked Staunton to advertise his chess set. Staunton did so in his column on 8 September 1849, and the chess set became famous under the name of Staunton.

We have quite a number of modern sets of chessmen (Staunton) in our household (predominantly by "Staunton Castle" and "House of Staunton"). All of them are excellently crafted, look magnificent and offer a superb playability. From all our sets, I regard this one here as the most beautiful one, and that for various reasons - it is very faithful to the original 1849 4.4" set by Jaques which it is reproduced after - I have developed an inordinate fondness for the 4.4" size (which requires a board with 64 cm squares) - and in my opinion, this offers a maximum of clarity (both regarding the chessmen and the board), and it simply feels wonderful to take these majestic and arch-classic chessmen in your hands! I don´t understand why THIS size is not the international standard for tournament play - whereas in the times of the Jaques originals, these 4.4" sets ("large Club size") were the rarest and most expensive sets of all - and have continued to be so up to this day! All in all, a fantastic set which we have used for many battles at home!
Beautiful set, very nicely carved. The weight of the pieces is impressive (possibly the most heavily weighted I've had in the size category) which gives a very pleasant feeling when moving them around. I will definitely purchase more sets from Staunton Castle.
1849 Early Version Reproduced 4.4" Natural Boxwood/Ebony
To me this represents the pinnacle in size of the classic 1849 Cooke / Staunton set. The pieces feel solid and heavy, and in the 4.4” size, that’s exactly what I like. There is a nice balance in the mutual proportions of the pieces, which makes this a coherent set.
The detailing on the queen's crown, the miter’s polished slit, the rook’s crenellations, are all excellent. Then there is the knight, simply gorgeous. With its totally symmetrical and identical face expression between the four pieces, the knight is the epitome of the craftsmanship of the wood carvers of Staunton Castle.
This is a magnificent set of chess pieces!!

The chess pieces I ordered were delivered very quickly and my high expectations were absolutely met. The material of the set of pieces is very high quality and the quality of workmanship can hardly be surpassed. I am delighted and would like to thank the team at MANDEEP HANDICRAFTS for this great work!
An excellent reproduction of the rare early 1849 sets. Great detailing, well finished , polished and heavily weighted. The lovely ebony grain can be seen in a strong light, so I was surprised both sides weighed exactly the same. Mandeep Saggu explained the weighting is adjusted to equalise both sides, which shows an amazing attention to detail. This is a really wonderful set which I can highly recommend.
