Staunton Castle proudly presents the Old Vienna Coffeehouse Chess Set. This Chess Set is a faithful reproduction and its design is true to the original - the carving is executed with precision and authentic detailing.
Research informs us that this particular style of chess set was used in Chess tournaments from around the year 1900 in Central Europe – the lands of the Austrian monarchy, as well as Germany, Switzerland, and Northern Italy. Major tournaments like Vienna 1898, Semmering 1927 and Karlsbad 1929 were played using the Vienna Coffeehouse design chess pieces.
The kings and queens are carved in characteristic Coffeehouse pattern and the bases of these chess pieces are in the Old Vienna style. The distinctive striated bishop ball tops gives this chess set a very special look. The knights have curious horses heads with their mane dressed to one side. The rooks have full turrets. The wide spreading convex bases of the pawns is in the typical Viennese style.
Original Coffeehouse sets were usually small and unweighted; we have been generous with the height of our pieces and have double-weighted them for better stability and playing pleasure.
We are launching this chess set in two kinds of antique finishes, one in a normal antiqued look and the second in a distressed antique look. The black side is not ebonised but made of genuine ebony wood.
Following are the some of the original images of this chess set and we made this chess set by following these images:
